How do we convince ourselves that flying, for example, is unsafe? The plane isn’t dangerous but we’ve convinced ourselves, though, that it is. Statistically it’s far safer than driving. In fact, if someone really isn’t willing to take risks, they’d never get in a car but rather would fly whenever they could! So, it’s really a matter of convincing ourselves of a perceived, not real, threat. Understanding how these fears and phobias are generated is critical to treatment.
